RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

thomber,
Pics of your mods to the firewall and or stand offs would be Great!
That dimension was holding me back a little, (engine too long for the cowl).

Mark.

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

I ran it on a stand first for about an hour then put it on my old 30cc yak.
The yak didn't like it that much, not enough power to fly like we're used to.
It seemed to run ok, no hints of wanting...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Just curious, what type of planes is everyone thinking of installing this engine in?
I'm thinking of the H9 PA-18 super cub myself.

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Did they do anything with the muffler issue, or is it still just a straight pipe?

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Nice break-in run....Hard and fast, seat the ring quick! That's how I do it too, don't have a bad runner yet, all have excellent compression.
You notice in the video that the power is at full boil...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

I think I'll keep it and run it till it blows, maybe it won't, we'll see.

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

If your ring lands and grooves have that much play there's a problem, that thing will hammer itself apart in no time!
SJN, mine is like yours in the video. The movement at the end of an 18in. prop...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

First off, it's not after several hours, but maybe an hour total time.
It had very little play if any at first, now it has way more than I feel safe running with.
Iv'e got a 15 year old Brison...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Now after the first day of flying with this engine, three flights, Iv'e found the crank has alot of play at the bottom end of the rod. This isn't good. I won't dump any more cash into this POS....

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

That is a beutiful job!! What is the flange itself made of? steel or brass?
On a side note, I noticed the price came down on these engines at AMR in Canada, now $369 US.
I wonder if we could make...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

I bet it will be perfect for your WW1 type planes, and I wouldn't worry about the silicone extension, it wasn't that loud with the header alone!
I think a 19-8 is not too much prop for this engine...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

I don't think it will handle more pitch very well. During takeoff, the plane is slow and lazy and climbs out rather weak, you can't go too steep or it may stall.
Myself, I like the planes to...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

I took the 38 out for its first flight today.
I wanted to get some good hot runs on it to loosen it up some.
I have this engine installed on a 30cc Yak 54, and it doesn't have very good verticle...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

It's gotten alot better since you have to be a member in the club to fly there now.
There is still a few that are a problem occasionally, as with any club.

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

If the silicone extension melts off, oh well, I tried. Still have to get a decent tank for the plane, think an 8 oz. will be plenty for this engine.
Found some cool tanks at 3dhobbyshop.

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

I'll be watching this thread very carefully about the muffler issue, because I think this engine might be too loud for our field. In the mean time, I'll just put a silicone extension/diverter on the...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Let Michaelchow know about it, so in the future they can package them a little better.
My engine had bent fins also and some nicks on it like it was clamped in a vise or something. I just...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Sonnich,
Your engine will get better with more time. Mine is running pretty good now that it has about 1.5 hours on it. This engine is a fuel miser, you can use a real small tank in the plane. Mine...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Michaelchow,
Do you have plans at all to offer a muffler for this engine, and where can we get parts if needed?

Thanks in advance, Mark.

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Hi all,
I put the timing back to stock, 40ish degrees, and installed a 20-8 wood prop. I got it started after alot of choke and let it run at a fast idle for about 30-45 min.
The guy I got the...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

When I measured the timing on my engine I used a degree wheel and the actual spark of the plug to tell me where it was at BTDC.
mpascual, I'm glad yours runs good, I really wanted this thing to...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

SJN,
My engine's timing was at 42 deg. out of the box, and it liked to kick back during hand flipping and would fire and kill itself.
It's too bad this didn't work out, next time I'll just wait...

RE: NGH 38CC 4 stroke

Sorry guys,
This engine is a huge waste of time and money. There are other engines out there in this size class that we KNOW work well for less money.
I just thought that it would be cool to try...
