I have made the gear doors for the mains. The following is the completed upper and lower gear doors. I will explain the detail on the next posting.

Hey Boyd,
Hope you had a great holiday and are getting ready for the New Year. Just started working on the wing on Monday and found as we found with the Avenger that there are some dimensional differences in the lumber.
My question is that in one of the earlier wing build posts you show a jig you made for the trailing edge, but a couple of posts later the jig is gone and you are working on the washout? I got the dimensions down from your excellent post but when I look at the pix I can't tell if the dimensions are from the end of the trailing edge or the beginning of the 1/8" sheeting....
Will send a few pix by Saturday showing you what my part of the basement and work area looks like

The measurement is from the trailing edge, not the sheeting

If you have a incidents meter use the same method I did. You can't go wrong.

Maser, I have been following this thread since the beginning and I am in awe of your work. I thought I'd share a little "Inspiration" with you. If you need any pictures of this T-28 to help you out, just let me know. This plane sits about 45 minutes from my house and I am usually at the museum at least once a month. I would live there if they'd let me.....LOL.

Hey David,
Thanks for the offer, if I lived that close I'd be pitching a tent there. I was at the Pima museum in Gus on last year and if not for my 3 year old grandson my son would still be looking for me.

By any chance did younhave to enlarge the spar cut outs on the wing ribs, I have measured and remeasured the spars and they are 1/4" but they are a bit higher than then rib tops. I don't want to do any extra cutting unless I really need to.

Larry,

I may have misunderstood what you were saying about the measurement from the trailing edge or the sheeting to get the proper washout. The measurement is taken from the trailing edge cap strip.I think that is what you meant as to the sheeting.

As to the spar cuts I would deepen them if neccessary. I have noticed that on various plans, when you cut the pieces, they don't always line up the way they show, even when useinga custom cutter.

I also have re-egineered the firewall on the fusalage. When I took out the Robart nose gear and installed the Sierra nose gear, I did not have to add as muchextra space to accomodate the inverted engine. Instead of adding the 2 1/2" I cut it back to about 3/4" Big difference when you use the right gear.

Thanks as always, luckily we happen to have an incidence meter that we used for the Avenger, but having your measurements as a double check is even better. Ordering gear next week so by the time it gets here I should have all the ribs ready to be permantly attached.

Here is the remaining pictures for the upper gear doors. Because thelower door sits as such an angel, I expoxied it to the wood piece. Then I use a 2-56 screw and nut to attach to thet-shaped piece that attaches to the anxle. I hope the pictures will tell the story.

I finished the cockpit. This is the kit from Dynamic Balsa, the "Master Series" cockpit kit for the Dave Platt T-28. I am very pleased with the kit. If you get one make sure you study the pictures that are inlcuded with the kit. I identified every part prior to cutting and gluing.

I bult one of those kits for a H9 P-47 - lot of work but well worth it.....you did a GREAT job on this one!

Gilbert, half hour se of phx. Just bought a house there, will be moving there in 2 years, 3 car garage a double and single which I have already laid claim to. Ceilings mus be 12 ft high in the garages, I have my son finding out how much to run additional power into the single

If I drive out to az I will be stopping by to see you. The week there was hectic helping the kids pack to become squatters in my house but I did find out from my sons friend that there is a field a mere 11 miles from the house
Started cutting the g-10 hinges and horns, never realized how hard 1/16 g-10 was to cut, any hints would be great.
Was at the WRAM show yesterday and have to say that I have NEVER seen so many foam ARFs, even KMP was only showing their foam models. I have to say if you. Go to their website and look at their Skyraider you would be hard pressed to tell from a distance.
You should check out this website IFLYTAILIES.com guy has some really nice cockpit stuff and pilots.

Building was set back a couple of weeks due to the fact I was finishing a Ziorli Stuka for a freind. Will be back on the T-28 soon.

I use a band saw (fine tooth) to cut by G-10. I have not had a problem yet. You have to watch yourfingers when cutting smaller parts though.

The following pictures show the nose gear door and cylinder

I guessed on how big and long the cylinder should be.

I'd be interested on how anybody else comes up with the right dimension cylinder for a particular application.

Nice job on the cylinders. I have a question about the gear, I am getting ready to mount the gear rails with the gear attached and want to make sure i'm in the right position. Any clues as to how you did yours?
As soon as I get the first one in I will post pix so you can let me know if I did it right.

Larry,

Look at the top and side view of the plans.Then temporarily mountthe gear to the rails. Place the gear on the plans and approximate the position. The key postion is when the gear is retracted. Make sure the gear and tire/wheel are inside the wheel well when retracted.

Just remember that if you change the opening on the wheel well (width), you will have the change the opening (width)of the portion of the wheel well that extends into the wing.

I had to make so many design changes because of going from Robart toSierra the build is nota good looking as Inormally do.

Also be certain to check the fiberglass cowl against firewall.I found out to late that they did not match.Of course I found out after I had the nose of the fusalage built up.

The pics attached are with the original Robart gear, but will give you an idea of how I did it.

Thanks for the info, I was asking about the mains, I'm thinking that if the side mount on axle is apps 1/16 up from the rib that should work. I had to get some 4" wheels to make sure hopefully they will be today. Will send pix over the weekend, not too much progress

Look at the front view of the plans for the wing. Place the gear in the poistion that allows the wheel to fully retract. The Sierra gear is a tight fit, but works. Be carful of the belly pan height. This is critical for the wheel not to touch the gear door when retracted as can be seen by the pictures. I eventually covered the hole.

Here are a few shots of the build. Thanks for the help about the mains, what I did was take the rail measurements off the plans and matched the angle to those dimensions. I figure if it's off a tad I only need to shim a bit with some washers, hopefully not.
As soon as I get the rails glued in and double check everything I can put in the tube for the servo extensions and air lines
Let me know if you see anything that doesn't look quite right...
