After 2 years I finished up a Byron/Iron Bay T-28. It has a 3w100, Robarts and Futaba 12FG. Now only if the snow would go away and the temps get into the 70's

jkeze,
Awesome, nice work, hopefully we who are about to embark on out T-28 journey will have something as nice...as for the snow, if your on the East Coast you have a chance for later next week for most if not all to be gone can't help you with the temp though

Nice job jkeze.

I did get started on mine (Dave Platt).  I will post some pics later.  All that I got done was the hardwood rails for the Robarts, and a layout of how I will mount everything in the wing.  I'm starting on the wing first.

Larry,

I did heed the advice on the T-28 build site you led me to as to the main retract support rails.

By the way, even if we had snow as much as you all get,  I'd still be able to build.  I have a 15x20 shop with heat.  Stays 60 to 80 degrees in there during the winter time.  It still can get cold here in December through February.

Default RE: T-28 Dave Platt

I have started on the Dave Platt T-28,the following picturesare the preliminary work prior to the actual construction.

The 1st& 2nd pic is the general layout ofhow I will assemple the wing and where the main components go. I use a servo for each wing control surface. Also I build the sub-components and place them in the general area where they will go.

The black cardboard tubing is used to run the servo leads thru the wing. The red tubing (nyrod) is used to run the airlines thru the wing.

Idraw aline on eachrib to show where the cord line is. This is to give reference for all measurements. Since Platt did not reference where the cord line should be, I measured 1/2 the distance ofthe leading and trailing edge. Some plans show where the cord line is. And in some cases it isnot center to center.

The main gear is Robart with a straight strut so I had to modify ribs W3 thruW6. Once I have determined the angle of the main supports (1/2" x 1/2" maple) for the struts, I assemble the unit to be installed later. You will notice the 1/4 x 1/4 bracing on the retract unit. This is to keep it aligned until after I install the unit in the wing. Once installed, I remove them. The reason for installingas a unit is because it keeps everything aligned.

Ialso build a CG block made out of 1/4"ply with a 6-32 blind nut. I install this at theCG. Once the plane is built, I hang it from the ceiling supported by a tackle. The series of pics show themethod of how to balance theplane. The 6-32 screw is fastened to a line which runs through the tackle. The line is then tied to the block which is on the wall. This hasbeena great success in the balancing of the planes I have built.BUILD THIS BLOCK WITHSTRENGTH. IT MUST SUPPORTTHE WEIGHT OF THE AIRPLANE.

Larry,

Ihad to learn how to put the pics in. I figured it out. Look again. I have more on there.

I am starting the wing, but I don't see any washout built in the wing. Did you notice anything on the plans that I could have missed? Platt doe's not mention it in his instructions.

Boyd.

Here is how I'm jigging the wing to keep it straight. I made a jig running the length of W1 to W16. It is tapered to from W1 to W16. It is 1/2 the height of thewing spare.

This does not account for any washout by doing it this way. Any comments from anybody?

Hey Boyd,
Great idea with the jig, as for the washout my suggestion is to call Dave directly, he's pretty good at returning phone calls, sorry I couldn't be more help.

Trying to remember the Platt T-28 Build I did 7 years ago and I believe there was a tapered balsa stick that should run from the leading edge to the traling edge which will give the proper washout. If you don't have that here is a site that I have used on other projects which will help.

Boyd,

Great job with that T-28!

I offer the graphicxs for that aircraft, in any size.

The graphicxs really amount to nothing compaired to the building talents of the modeler. Must keep that in perspective.

Good luck with your progress!

Boyd.
Step #17 in the building instructions mentions sheeting the bottom of the wings. "....the panels remain flexible until the later addition of the upper skins lock in the proper washout."
The wing is not mentioned again until step #53. Nothing about how to jig the wing to get the 3 degrees washout. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks Guys.

I talked to Dave Platt today and he confirmed that there is a 3 degree washout.  He gave me a suggestion on how to do it, but it requires taking the wing off the building table which I really dont want to do.

Dean RCU, thanks, this is the method I prefer to use.  Nick Ziorli does the same thing on his plans, but he shows you how to jig the wing on the building board to get the proper washout.  I've built his Corsair and it flew right off the drawing board without any trim needed.  Your article basically suggests the same method, build it on the board.

On the Ziroli plans he lays basically a 1/4 x 1/4 stringer diagonally across the bottom of the wing to get the tip at the proper washout.

I intend use the same method, but need to determine how big the stringer needs to be and at what location to place it under the wing.

Platt does not show anything like this on the plans so I will have to figure out how to shim the wing from center to end of wing.

My freind Steve Keesey has several protractors to measure the 3 degrees that I can put on the building table.

I will post some pics once I figure this out.

Default RE: T-28 Dave Platt

Ok guys, I figured this out.

I built a table to hold the Robart Incidence Meter, as you can see from the photos.

The table holds the meter, and the legs are then pinned to the end rib (W16). Once the meter is pinned to the end rib, make sure the bottom of the legs are on the cord line, raise the back side of the rib util the meter reads 3 degrees. Place one end of a 1/4" sq. stringer under the rib. Then place the other end of the stinger under the center rib, in this case I choose W2. Raise W2 until you get it at 0 degrees.

Now make sure the stringer is straight across the wing. Place the remaining ribs in place resting them on the 1/4" sq. stringer.

For those that don't want to go through this process the demension at W2 is that the rear end of the stringer is 1-1/16" from the trailing edge of the wing. The demension at W16 is that the rear end of the stringer is 3/16" from the trailing edge of the wing.

Doe's anyone have any comments on the methodology?

Boyd,
First a happy new year to all the T-28 guys out there. Love the idea for the washout, and the pix are extremely helpful. Should have my kit and retracts by the later part of next week or the the week after, it will be nice to do a build at home for a change.

Talk soon

Boyd,
You're my hero or you have a very understanding wife, mine of course wants me to be near her so she can annoy me. When I get my kit I need some clarification on the wash out as the pix look like they contradict what you wrote. Hopefully when I have the ribs laid out it will make sense.

Larry,

I walk a delicate tight rope. My wife is very understanding. We do things together at lease once a week. I'm not sure of your question. If you also look at the web site that DeanRCU sent that will also be of help. Let me know the specifics and I can guide you through it.

Larry, When you get on this site look at the top and you will see the PDF version click on it. That version has diagrams which are self explanatory.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the info, the diagrams help alot. I'm guessing some minor adjustments need to made to the rib cutout where the spars go to get the proper angle. As soon as I get the kit and start laying everything out I think it will make sense. Not being the brightest bulb in the chandelier I need to see things in front of me to get the feel as to what happens as you read instructions.

Boyd, I walk the same tightrope and my wife is actually pretty good about the hobby, a bit testy when I stay at work to work on the Avneger but except for bugging me about doing my train layout she is pretty understanding. She only requires 2 nights a week which isn't terrible.

It was a balmy 29 here today with a windchill of 15, and tomorrow for even lower temps, hope you guys are staying war.

Thanks again for the help

Larry

Larry,

Trains, You have to be kidding. I have a HO layout in one of our additions to the house. 48" curves, a Big Boy, and some Turbines. (UPof course). I dont' work on it much. Planes take the majority of my time.
