Larry, Good luck on the P-38 maiden.


Boyd, I was going to ask what you guys are going to use for power. I was checking the Saito Radials but what they have is either to powerful or to weak for what I want. The Moki 180 is on my list right now. The filler I use is a small amount of finishing resin mixed with plenty of micro baloons until it is as thick as peanut butter. The thicker it is the easier it is to sand. I use finger diped in 90% alcohol to smooth out the surface. The nave lights are made the same way.

I went with a Fuji BT-50ESI (46.50cc). In order to fit in the cowl without making holes on the top I inverted the engine. By doing this you have to move the engine forward of the nose gear rails. I've loaded some pictures for your review. Although I have quoted the move of the engine forward 2 1/2" double check for your self to make sure this works for you. If you want the whole series onhowI did the entire engine mount etc.I can send them to you.

The surface is covered with Flight metal first. The rivets are punched out of a sheet of .003 aluminum over some hard cork or rubber which gives them a dome. They are placed 1/4 inch apart on 1/6 th scale T-28 and they are 5/64 th in diameter.
On the rivets I use a a bottle with 1/32 tube to put a small drop of Formula 560 glue on a Premark line on the model holding the rivet with a small ball driver that was rubbed on bees wax it is placed it in the proper location. I used a small hex driver for a Handel in order to hold onto the tube. The tube will get cogged at times but a couple raps on my bench and the rivets fall out. With bees wax on the end of the ball driver you can just touch the top of the dome and it will pick it right up. I don't know weather you can see it but there is a rivet on the end of the driver.

To say I'm speechless would be a gross understatement, the workmanship is museum quality and the detail the rivets add is awesome.
Two questions, are you going to drive the cowl flaps with mini or full size servos and are you driving them with the throttle channel.
Also are you using the flite metal over the fiberglass to simulate the panels?
I figure I have at least another week of repair on the P-38 and then finally back to the Trojan, I hope you don't mind that I am going to be stealing your cowl flap idea.
Boyd, it's a shame Dean and I will be so far away from you, I for one could use all the tutelage I can get for my build from you two.
If my Trojan comes out 1/3 as well as yours I will be a very happy camper.

Since I'm still working full time I'm shocked that I get as much accomplished as I do. The idea of the rivets is certainly piquing my interest but it would take me another 3 years of building
Hopefully I will be back on the Trojan in 2 weeks and I con continue tackling the first flap.
The weather here has been decent for flying so besides flying either sat or sun and spending a bit of time with the wife there hasn't been mush time left for building.

Larry, Thanks, I'll decide how to move the cowl flaps after the engine is installed meanwhile the nut that holds the drive rod for the flaps is tightened to the point where I can move them by hand. The surface is fiber glassed first and the Flite metal is installed in the same matter as the full scale. On the T-28 the panels overlap so I overlap them 1/8 th of an inch Start on the tip of the stab and work in and forward on the fuse bottom first then up the sides as you go forward. Sounds like you had a mishap with the 38 hope it wasn't too bad. I enjoy putting building Ideas out so others can use them.

Where do you get the .003 aluminum? It sound like it's as thin as aluminum foil.

Here you go Boyd. McMaster-Carr search for Aluminun shim stock. I use both the .003 and the .005 rolls of the tempered material. Aluminun foil is soft and I use it on most of the surface. I did build a P-39 where I used .005 on about 50%of the surface.

Larry, There is a 3/4 inch extension over the flaps. Taper the back edge after. The plans show the extension in the flap drive detail.

Larry, I fogot to make the sheet with the extension on the first T-28. I added a small triangle stock on the rear edge of the wing and used 3/32 sheet. After it was dry I sanded it down even with the rest of the wing.

I did the same thing. I had to add the extension after the fact with triangle stock.

Hi guys,
Started working on the landing light for the Trojan while I wait for 2 pro links to show up so I can finish the outboard flaps on the P38.
Dean, I will be in Arizona the week of October 29th so I can raid the grand kids candy take from Halloween...heheheh
Let me know if you free anytime that week and I'll see if I can schedule all my contractor appts around it. I was planning on PIMA for Tuesday the 30th or Thursday the 1st.
Have to get the flap LE's cut so I can start working on them after I get the landing light done...

I ran across this Trojan article from MAN somewhere on RCU and thought you might enjoy the sortie article while you are waiting for paint to cure and glue to dry. I always like the way they used to do the hobby stuff and add in a bit of history.

Also, I am not sure if you can still get graveyard tours down across the street from PIMA Air Museum but if you are interested, look into it. I did that years ago and it was an incredible thing to go through. Enjoy PIMA at any rate. Great place.

Thanks for the article, will take plaenty of pix of the Trojan when I go to PIMA, Boyd if you need anything in particular let me know and I'll photograph for you.
Nothing on the Trojan, still working out the mechanics on the light, I'm using a landing light from Ram lighting that we had left over from the Avenger build and I'm trying to figure out what to do with the extra length.
On a happier note the P-38 is within 1/2 hour of being ready to fly again
Hope you guys have had some good flying weather.
Tentative Avenger engine start and maybe test flight next Sunday, will let you know how that goes
